Professor Thomas 101
A “Katie” herself, Professor Mary Thomas has an impressive educational background. From a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Catherine, an MBA in Management, and a PhD in Leadership, Mary is a true life learner, and is truly passionate about the education system. Throughout her career, Mary has been teaching in higher education for over 20 years, and has worked in various leadership roles, primarily within the fitness and wellness industry.
“The opportunity to return to St. Kate’s and teach at my alma mater was something I couldn’t pass up. I love having the ability to inspire students just as I was inspired years ago.”
Within the St. Kate’s MBA program, Professor Thomas currently teaches Quantitative Methods for Managers, Leading Teams for Quality and Competency, Managing People and Organizations, and Economics for Managers.
Who is she, really?
We asked Professor Thomas a series of questions to figure out who she is as a “real human being” outside of the classroom. Here’s what she had to say:
What is something – outside of education – that you are extremely passionate about?
Given it has been my career for over 20 years, the fitness/wellness industry is my passion! I still teach group fitness classes and my absolute favorite is indoor group cycling (aka: Spinning). I am also passionate about food and eat almost entirely organic whole foods.
What’s your favorite thing to do in the Twin Cities?
Here in the Twin Cities we are blessed with a ton of great trails. My most favorite thing to do is ride my bike on those trails. From my house to Stillwater and back is a nice 25-mile ride on the Gateway and Brown’s Creek trail, which I try to do at least once per week during nice weather.
What energizes you to head to campus each day?
I’m energized because I am passionate about what I do and where I do it. I absolutely love teaching and love doing so at St. Kate’s! One of my mottos in life is: “If Monday morning sucks, change your Monday morning.” In other words, make the necessary changes so you enjoy your life. J
Above all else, Professor Thomas hopes that she is able to inspire her students and instill in them a strong sense of self confidence. “My hope is that MBA students will increase their critical thinking and writing skills, and obtain the confidence they need to go out and rock their careers!”
